Have you ever seen a server with a post-it note on it reading “LEAVE ON, DO NOT TOUCH”? Chances are it was probably the mail server. Email has a lot of components and they all need to play along, so once you have the system working, you want to modify it as little as possible. Security updates only, basically. And certain checks, like making sure that the storage component isn’t getting filled up too much.</p>

Welp, I’ve decided to bite the bullet and finally go and spend a significant amount of my time learning to code</em>. Certainly I’m not in unknown territory, heck, I even took up Haskell a couple of times. But I’m fundamentally a system administrator, not a programmer, which for all intents and purposes isn’t the same – I’m very used to setting up and maintaining systems, networking, modifying portions of code when I need software to do something specific differently. And I am still very much in my comfort zone when I write shell scripts, my favorite is zsh (who cares about POSIX-compatibility these days anyway?). But actually learning how to code? With the exception of Haskell which I sadly decided to abort for a host of reasons, I haven’t ever really given that a try. Until now.</p>

As a Linux sysadmin you don’t really need that much. Basically a computer on which you can install a Linux distribution of choice, configure it, and be able to use a browser and open up a terminal to work on the servers you manage. I didn’t have much requirements outside of those.</p>

As the designated tech honcho for No Agenda I’ve been dedicating a lot of time over the past year to researching the best possible successor (the fifth incarnation!) to our current infrastructure. Our current Linux distribution just isn’t cutting it anymore and the hardware’s getting old – changes need to be made. But where to begin? Should I stick with what I know (Debian, Gentoo, Funtoo), or venture out into uncharted territory?</p>
